iPod, 2005, rewind, stealing music, gospel radio, white jesus and the epstein files
Hey, don’t mind me, i’m just “illegally downloading” My Chemical Romance from a file sharing program to then put on my 2005 5th generation iPod in color, white. Other recent acquisitions include “Young Folks” by Peter Bjorn and John, The Specials,“Bittersweet Symphony” from NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL MUSIC VOLUME 37 and “Louisianna” by The Walkmen. I saw The Walkmen one time in Philly at a place called The Starlight Ballroom. They were giving out free Sparks, which was the first ever alcoholic energy drink, it was bright orange and pretty sure each can took a decade off your life. I even “illegally downloaded” my own music because I don’t even think I have those files in my possession. I decided this week that it’s bizarre to not actually have a digital music library, no one possesses these things, music itself (out of physical media) is dependent upon internet connection and and it has been fun to sit and think about important songs and records from all throughout life to then find and put them on this, yes, 2005 5th generation iPod in color white that I found. When I was a kid I used to steal CD’s from Hot Topic in the mall. They’re owned by a private equity firm so who gives a shit. They used to be concealed in those security boxes to convince you the alarm would go off. I actually think I stole this same MCR record I am downloading now from there. I also remember taking “Achilles Heel” by Pedro the Lion. I think I may have told that story to David Bazan when I met him backstage at Basement East in Nashville a bunch of years ago. Boygenius was there too, I remember getting a very nervous cliquey high school energy from them that night. Assuming because Bazan is an incredible songwriter and an inspiration to us all and here we all were just hanging out.
Anyway, early 2000’s, Technology was dumber and things were simpler then (in certain aspects). Did you know it’s hard to find an aux cable these days? They’ve all been traded in for USB-C to USB-C and bluetooth. I remember 2007 driving through Philly to some party, one person would get nominated DJ and get the aux cable. Sometimes it would only come out of one side of the speakers so you had to twist and jiggle it bit until the other side cracked on and hope it wouldn't move.
